Jiu Jitsu - Beginner Tips Jiu jitsu is much easier to do if you have basic fitness. Having basic fitness allows you to learn the moves quicker. If you are fitter the sparring sessions become easier and this allows your mind to absorb more without worrying you might hurt yourself. To get fit all you need to do is start power walking and having some willpower will also help. When you start Jiu Jitsu your ego often get in the way. You might feel embarrassed that you have to ‘tap’ so often in the beginning. If you can ignore your ego you’ll see improvements pretty quickly. During the first training sessions you’ll most probably get beating by the better students as long as your ego can cope with this you’ll enjoy these sections and your Jiu Jitsu will improve. If on the other-hand you let your ego get in the way of these sparring sessions your enjoyment will be less and you won’t get as much out of these training sessions. Some people have fears about ‘tappings’ – so to get over this I recommend that in your next session you should be tapped at least 10 times. This will allow you to get over your fear and by doing this often you’ll become skilled and more calm when these ‘tappings’ happen. When you start the initial training it might be overwhelming to find out how many moves are available in jiu jitsu but actually there is no need to use all these moves. Often you get favorite moves that you end up using most often and other moves that you may never use. There are many grapplers who can show hundreds of different jiu jitsu techniques as well as counters and re-counters. But a technique only becomes a skill once you can successfully use it in a fight. You’ll find it most helpful if you go over and over the basic movements and techniques and try to refine and tweak them to become as skilful as you can. For a beginner it’s best to practice half a dozen simple moves and work on them until they are part of you. It’s extremely important to learn the moves the correct way as it will be more difficult to break bad habits and correct weakness that you may have developed over time. It’s important that you start slowly and think about each move so that these bad habits don’t happen when you first start training.
